Summary

It was the summer Coltrane died, the summer of love and riots, and the summer when a chance encounter in Brooklyn led two young people on a path of art, devotion, and initiation。 Patti Smith would evolve as a poet and performer, and Robert Mapplethorpe would direct his highly provocative style toward photography。 Bound in innocence and enthusiasm, they traversed the city from Coney Island to Forty-second Street, and eventually to the celebrated round table of Max's Kansas City, where the Andy Warhol contingent held court。 In 1969, the pair set up camp at the Hotel Chelsea and soon entered a community of the famous and infamous—the influential artists of the day and the colorful fringe。 It was a time of heightened awareness, when the worlds of poetry, rock and roll, art, and sexual politics were colliding and exploding。 In this milieu, two kids made a pact to take care of each other。 Scrappy, romantic, committed to create, and fueled by their mutual dreams and drives, they would prod and provide for one another during the hungry years。
Just Kids begins as a love story and ends as an elegy。 It serves as a salute to New York City during the late sixties and seventies and to its rich and poor, its hustlers and hellions。 A true fable, it is a portrait of two young artists' ascent, a prelude to fame。

“it’s the artist’s responsibility to balance mystical communication and the labour of creation。”

The book is like a very long poem。 Even the most mundane things are described creatively and romantically。Can't believe I didn't know Patti。。。 what a beautiful soul。 The book is like a very long poem。 Even the most mundane things are described creatively and romantically。Can't believe I didn't know Patti。。。 what a beautiful soul。 。。。more

I won't say this was easy to read because it wasn't but i'm really glad that I did it。 The best parts of this book were the scenes with patti & robert。 I found myself distracted everytime she started talking about other people 🙈I don't know how to rate a book like this because i'm not used to read stuff like this but I'm feeling a strong 3☆ I won't say this was easy to read because it wasn't but i'm really glad that I did it。 The best parts of this book were the scenes with patti & robert。 I found myself distracted everytime she started talking about other people 🙈I don't know how to rate a book like this because i'm not used to read stuff like this but I'm feeling a strong 3☆ 。。。more

A deeply honest and personal insight into a core-shaking relationship。 A magical reveal of a fabled time in history。 Occasionally errs on the edge of ostentatious name-dropping, but then - perhaps this is just a reflection of that moment in NYC's history。 A deeply honest and personal insight into a core-shaking relationship。 A magical reveal of a fabled time in history。 Occasionally errs on the edge of ostentatious name-dropping, but then - perhaps this is just a reflection of that moment in NYC's history。 。。。more

I loved this book。 I loved reading about how they both started out, the close bond that they had that no one could break。 The way they saw the world through each others eyes and how much they still cared for each other years later。 Truly a wonderful story of two very interesting people。

Coming out from this book, feeling a kind of tenderness that only the best books can inspire。 Patti Smith's writing, though sparse, possesses its own kind of rythmn。 As she recounts the story of her relationship to Robert Mapplethorpe, I was touched by its ability to erase the world around them--even as the circumstances of their lives changed, the magnetism and affection that existed between the two of them seemed to trump the rest of their professional successes。 Smith describes Mapplethorpe w Coming out from this book, feeling a kind of tenderness that only the best books can inspire。 Patti Smith's writing, though sparse, possesses its own kind of rythmn。 As she recounts the story of her relationship to Robert Mapplethorpe, I was touched by its ability to erase the world around them--even as the circumstances of their lives changed, the magnetism and affection that existed between the two of them seemed to trump the rest of their professional successes。 Smith describes Mapplethorpe with an unparalleled specificity and tenderness, each detail chronicled so vividly that you can feel the love interlaced into each page。 However, the subject of the book is juxtaposted by Patti's plain, almost passive voice, as she recounts both of their rise to fame as well as the many people who died during their collective journey。 Not much more to say than that I was profoundly affected by this book。 It's very special to me。 。。。more

Picked this up based on a recommendation of books to read on a trip to New York。 It is not a good New York book and honestly just not a good book at all。 I’m not sure why I finished it other than a few interesting anecdotes here and there about them crossing paths with famous people。 Overall just felt like a selfish indulgence for the author。 Blech。

now。 where do i even begin?this book was recommended to me COUNTLESS times by my housemate, who constantly deemed it one of her most favourite books, one of the best she’s ever read。 Gifted to me by her for my 20th, i was more than excited to read it。 it is also my first memoir。first, the writing in this is spectacular。 this book is so wonderfully executed, that this could turn any non-reader into an avid literature fiend。 the five-star review in my opinion could be based on that alone。 the way now。 where do i even begin?this book was recommended to me COUNTLESS times by my housemate, who constantly deemed it one of her most favourite books, one of the best she’s ever read。 Gifted to me by her for my 20th, i was more than excited to read it。 it is also my first memoir。first, the writing in this is spectacular。 this book is so wonderfully executed, that this could turn any non-reader into an avid literature fiend。 the five-star review in my opinion could be based on that alone。 the way Smith crafts these pictures with her choices of words is astonishing, the feelings that they manage to convey just show how relatable this story truly is - the turmoils of having no money and no where to go, being in love, the sacrifices you make in love, the friendships you make along the way that are sometimes only fleeting, yet are some of the most important of all。 the discussion of the current timeframe during the book is also very well put across for readers to interpret, you can picture yourself so clearly as if you were there。 Smith’s writing is informative and direct, while still keeping that element of softness and romance。 there are relative convocations that provoke deep thought, there is rawness is how hard you have to work to get to where you want to be, and sometimes, the only place you need to be is right next to the person you love。this book also sheds light on important topics such as homosexuality and open relationships, which felt refreshing。 the imagery of LSD, Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix & Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, hotels and the streets of New York transforms this reading experience into a serene movie of lives that were lived, and that will be remembered forever。I will be reading this book again, because I don’t think reading it the once does it enough justice。 My most deserving 5-star to date。 。。。more

Interesting, but about half way through, I was wishing she shared a little more about her own process, not just Robert’s。 Just a few sentences here and there about when and how she became interested in poetry, how she learned to play instruments and sing, would have gone a long way to making the story more understandable。

I literally don’t even have words but Patti Smith writes in a way that makes me want to be a poor struggling poet living in New York City in the era of rock and roll。 Please read this it might ruin your life。

A gorgeous story。 The writing (and reading of the audiobook) is beautiful and feels authentic。 Both warming and heartbreaking。 A masterpiece as hopeful as it is devastating。

I'm going to preface this by saying that I am not usually one for memoirs。 In fact this is probably the second memoir I've ever read in my life。 However this book has shot up to probably my top 5 favorite reads of all time。 Smith has a writing style that is very succinct and at times receptive, which did get annoying at some sections, but the flow of the story and the confined focus on her and Mapplethorpe's relationships managed to only draw me in further and further as the book progressed。 At I'm going to preface this by saying that I am not usually one for memoirs。 In fact this is probably the second memoir I've ever read in my life。 However this book has shot up to probably my top 5 favorite reads of all time。 Smith has a writing style that is very succinct and at times receptive, which did get annoying at some sections, but the flow of the story and the confined focus on her and Mapplethorpe's relationships managed to only draw me in further and further as the book progressed。 At times I would suddenly remember that this was not in fact fiction, that the events in this book happened and I would need to take a minute。 Despite all of this, this remains a beautiful recounting of an exceptional relationship that just highlights how complicated feelings of love, friendship and loyalty are。 I started this book almost hoping my inner contrarian wouldn't like it, but alas that was not the case。 I will say that if you are someone who doesn't enjoy name dropping (even though Smith makes it feel like its not in fact name dropping) or choppy transitions this might not be your cup of tea。 。。。more

Just Kids tells of the pieces of our existence that we are, on rare occasion, able to store within the souls of those who truly see us。 Patti Smith’s memoir of her formative years as an artist in the creative halcyon that was New York in the late 60’s and early 70’s is a brilliantly, and beautifully written story of her friendship and shared life with fellow artist, Robert Mapplethorpe。 Intimately exploring their art and its becoming, Patti and Robert, themselves, also serve as canvases in which Just Kids tells of the pieces of our existence that we are, on rare occasion, able to store within the souls of those who truly see us。 Patti Smith’s memoir of her formative years as an artist in the creative halcyon that was New York in the late 60’s and early 70’s is a brilliantly, and beautifully written story of her friendship and shared life with fellow artist, Robert Mapplethorpe。 Intimately exploring their art and its becoming, Patti and Robert, themselves, also serve as canvases in which their fate is drawn with long, winding strokes that culminate (maybe even unexpectedly) in the masterpiece that is their current creative renown。 However, it is ultimately a study of two very different artists, with very different sensibilities。Patti’s love and talent as a poet shine here, as her prose can illicit the most finely tuned emotion without the faintest sense of bloat or pretense。 Often humorous, always eloquent, her voice is distinct and affable。 More superficially, their story is one full of amusing glimpses that pull the curtain back on nearly every major name of the beatnik and early rock era。 Never salacious or sleezy, the characters (particularly in the Chelsea Hotel) truly bring a sense of levity and earnest support to the creatively obsessed Patti and Robert。 Just Kids felt like the rawest kind of magic- The kind that can actually immortalize that very part of ourselves we’ve given to the people we’ve loved, to be remembered even when they’re gone。 。。。more
